We’ve all heard the phrase "self-care," but in our busy lives, it’s often reduced to a luxury or a temporary escape. At Corazón Counseling and Wellness, we see self-care differently. We believe it is the intentional, daily act of listening to what your corazón (heart) truly needs to feel safe, grounded, and whole.
True self-care is a comprehensive practice that touches every part of our experience. When we look at the seven layers of self-care, we can move beyond "quick fixes" and start building a sustainable foundation for mental wellness.
The 7 Layers of Self-Care
1. Physical: Restoring the Body
This is about honoring your physical vessel. It includes consistent sleep, stretching, movement that feels good, and nourishing your body with what it needs to function.
2. Emotional: Nurturing the Heart
Emotional self-care involves developing tools for stress management, practicing gratitude, and offering yourself the same forgiveness and compassion you would give a dear friend.
3. Social: Protecting Your Energy
This layer focuses on connection. It involves setting healthy personal boundaries, identifying your support systems, and spending intentional time with those who fill your cup.
4. Spiritual: Finding Connection
Whether through meditation, yoga, or time spent in nature, spiritual self-care is about finding a sense of peace and connection to something larger than yourself.
5. Personal: Reclaiming Your Identity
Personal self-care is about joy. It’s making time for the hobbies and interests that make you uniquely you, outside of your roles as a professional, parent, or partner.
6. Space: Creating Your Sanctuary
Our environment impacts our internal state. This layer involves creating a sense of safety, organization, and stability in your physical surroundings, ensuring your space feels like a home.
7. Work: Honoring Your Boundaries
Professional self-care is vital for preventing burnout. It includes managing your time effectively, taking your full breaks, and setting firm boundaries between your career and your personal life.
